Modern helmets are designed so that the effect of a force, for example an impact, is transformed into deformation energy. The material of the outer shell is much less critical than the composition of the inner material (polystyrene foam between the outer shell and the inner lining). This layer is the only part of the helmet which can be compressed, and it performs the actual cushioning in an accident by deforming. This deformation results in the entire helmet being ruined, and it will no longer be able to perform its protective function in another impact. Therefore, it is important to replace the helmet after an accident.
The lifetime of a motorcycle helmet depends primarily on the internal material, because that is what performs the actual cushioning in an impact. Polystyrene is usually used here; over time it loses its plasticizer, becoming increasingly stiffer. This aging process is independent of the actual use of the helmet: even a helmet which only sits on the shelf is affected.
Therefore, uvex recommends replacing the motorcycle helmet after roughly 5 years, and no later than 7 years, even if the helmet has only been used rarely during this period and has not been in any accidents.
The helmet should have been tested according to the latest standard. According to the current standard, this is ECE 22.05, which is sewn into the inside of the motorcycle helmet. You can find more information on the testing criteria in our standards table.
uvex does not offer custom helmet painting. Please note that, when painting, applying stickers, or varnishing, the paints, adhesives, or varnishes may contain components which negatively affect the stability of the helmet and thus its protective effect. If changes like this have been made, we would have to exercise our exemption from liability. We recommend you contact a professional painter.
